Les Halles - Best Steak Frites in the City?

Andrew C | Jul 12, 2004 06:54 PM

I made a long-delayed trip to Les Halles on Park this week. I'd read so much about it, especially as a fan of Mr. Bourdain. But I wasn't terribly impressed... the steak was okay, a little chewy, and the frites a little overcooked... or maybe this is just the style?

I've had steak frites in Paris, even at the most undistinguished bistros outside the tourist sites, and I think I liked those more. Maybe it was the location, or maybe I just don't know what's good.

I've also had steak frites at Floret and Pastis on the West Side, and I really liked what I had there as well. Maybe I liked Floret because it was at 4 in the morning and I had no other options, and because of the good company at Pastis.

So, I'm just trying to start an interesting thread here... what's the word on Les Halles nowadays? (For all my disappointment, I might be back -- I liked the ambiance when I visited. It was pretty quiet when I was there. The steak frites were passable, just not amazing.)

And where are the best steak frites in the city? In my opinion, you get extra points for lower prices. I don't think it's meant to be an extremely expensive meal!

Thanks.

Andrew
