Lemongrass Hot Pot In Boca

erica | Mar 27, 201709:05 AM

Four of us had dinner at this branch of a Taiwanese hotpot chain last Friday night. They take reservations. Although I did not take notes, the overall impression of each of us is that this is a worthy place to keep in mind in a sea of mediocrity.

Each diner chooses from several different broth bases including two Thai versions; I chose the "hot and spicy" at the suggestion of the lovely and helpful Chinese waitress. I thought the ruddy-colored soup was excellent even on its own, and superb when doctored with some of the condiments and herbs. (Please note that I am not an experienced hot pot-ter, having had this dish only once before, years ago, at Little Pepper (Sichuan) in Flushing; that might have been more authentic but I liked this broth a lot more)

Once you choose your broth, you are on your own to select from a wide array of proteins--everything from head-on shrimp to pig intestines. Most are labeled. I stuck mostly to the familiar beef and pork selections, along with tofu in various incarnations. Most of the dishes are displayed on ice but a conveyor belt runs through the large dining room, bearing plates of vegetables both familiar and fairly exotic.

You have a two-hour window for eating, for $25.60 each; beer and wine are available for an extra charge.
