Lemon frosting tastes like fish

I made a four-layer lemon cake with lemon frosting based on the recipe in Saveur's March 2012 issue. All the ingredients - butter, sugar, lemons - were newly purchased. The cake turned out great but the frosting had a slight fishy/metallic flavor that got stronger with each passing day (I kept the leftover cake covered in the fridge - there was nothing fishy in there).

Any ideas what might have happened?
