learning to cook Japanese

So, after finally a success at a sake-simmered mackeral, I'm ready to throw myself whole-hog into trying to learn to cook Japanese. Got myself a copy of the Tsuji Japanase Cooking: A Simple Art.

Questions: best produce and Japanese meats in the area? My home is accessible to Little Tokyo, and I work near the Sawtelle area. Any places for consistently good Japanese greens, leafs, mushrooms, tofu, etc.?
