leaf lard..it's been frozen for a couple of years/toss or use and I do have to render, right?

finally trying to use the "exotics" in my pantry and freezer after rough few years. Want to use the lard in pastry for savories, read the Melissa Clark article, it's pure white, bought from organic local shop, If I can use it instead of tossing, anyway to speed up the rendering process...microwave or something? I can't just cut it up and use like frozen butter, I fear. thanks.
