Le Theatre

Just wanted to pass on a lovely little gem which seems to slip under the radar. Early movie and then dinner at Le Theatre near Berkeley Rep. Maybe cuz there was nothing playing at the rep this Sat. night but the place was pretty empty. The place seems hidden in some kind of courtyard/office complex, but a lovely room with generous space and good proportions. We were very pleased with our meal - both quality and variety were definitely excellent. Service was friendly and professional. Prices were very reasonable for a white tablecloth type of place.
Loved the fact that they offer stuff you don't normally see on menus. Special tonight was a tripe soup - now how often do you see that on a local menu. I had a romaine salad with crab and avocado to start. nicely done though a little on the greasy side, then followed with roast quail with warmed grapes and roasted garlic. Perfect. Finished with a warm raspberry custard tart. I liked the warm custard giving the raspberries just a little warmth to really bring up their flavor. My companions had a delicious petrale sole grill as well as coq au vin. We got a kick out of the potatoes served with the coq fashioned to look like mushrooms. All in all an excellent meal.
Keep this place in mind if you're in downtown Berkeley.
