I finally completed my tour of local French style patisseries this weekend. Wanted to share my overall impressions:
Le Petit Mitron, Narberth, PA Smallest and simplest but very good pastries, love the fruit charlotte and flanlike raspberry chambord. Wish they were located closer to me, perfect as an everyday neighborhood patisserie. They won 2001 Best of Philly for croissants, but didnt realize it til I was on my way out. Maybe I should do a croissant shootout next...
Aux Petit Delices, Wayne PA Wider selection of more complicated pastries. Hard to put my finger on it but somehow felt that the quality and finishing touches trailed LPM and MP. On a side note they do stock some enticing hard to find items like fresh foie gras, terrines, duck confit, smoked salmon, caviar, charcuteries etc. yum! Great potential for a killer sandwich finished off with a good dessert.
Miel Patisserie, Cherry Hill NJ my vote for the best of the three, the most upscale but also the one with the widest selection. Pastries are the most aesthetically attractive. Had a croissant here but found it to be a tad overbaked.
All three definitely worth a visit if you're looking for some restaurant quality desserts or need something special to bring over.
P.S - MP and LMP both serve La Colombe coffee dont recollect seeing it in APD. Just wanted to add that for anyone that cares, I personally feel that La Colombe in center city serves the best espresso and cappuccino in town. To the point where Ive stopped ordering them in my local coffee joints.
