I went to Le Colonial for my second time in 1 year last night and can now say full heartedly that it is a fantastic restaurant! I never see it on this board so I thought I would make quick mention of it. The restaurant is in the old Trader Vic's on Cosmo Place - Union Sq/ Tenderloin district which means for many people, easy public transportation (I took the 38). The restaurant space was just georgeous, you really get removed from the city going onto the alley and upstairs and down the grand outdoor hallway entering the restaurant (see website for photo).
Service was great both times I went. Despite the young and handsom waiters, they actually know the French Vietnamese menu in and out. He was even able to get into wine talk with my boyfriend.
For food, we started with crispy duck rolls with a red wine vinegar sauce. Perfectly crispy roll, with nothing but duck inside. YOu were to put the roll into a lettuce leaf and add carrots, cilantro and mint as you like.
Main Course, I had the Lobster Special wok tossed with ginger garlic and butter over bok choy. It was a 2 pound lobster and absolutly delicious (and of course I took the shells home to make stock!)Out waiter came over about 10 minutes after we started and cracked and opened the remaining shells that didn't have as easy access. My date had the lamb chops (12 oz) wich was also a large portion. It had a strong basil flavor and a lime-black pepper dipping sauce which had such a great flavor on anything! We also had the green beans as a side. It is kind of like the Betelnut ones, with gooey brown sauce on it, but these were so crisp and not over done -- just the way I like it.
For dessert our waiter brought us each a glass of champagne, wasn't the best ever, but a fun and nice gesture. We at the Banana Mouse in crepes with chocolate sauce. I am always a fan of dessert banana's so I loved this.
All in all a great night. The bill was pricey despite the moderate bottle of wine we purchased. The total with a nice tip was $210. BUT I have gone with a girlfriend before and we split and entree, had a few sides and appetizers, 1/2 bottle of wine, and dessert for $100 (and were stuffed!) so it is a well priced restaurant for the service, portions, and taste.
