Since Bandini's on sabbatical, someone's got to take up the slack...
For the last few weeks I've noticed a truck parked on Hawthorne Blvd, just south of 147th St. Last night my stomach, wallet and location were in alignment so I stopped by.
What caught my eye was the huarache and mulita options in addition to the usual suspects. I had a huarache al pastor, set me back $4. What you get was a freshly made masa 'sandal' with a substantial portion of meat topped with lettuce, crema, onions, radishes and crumbly (probably cotija) cheese. The meat was pretty tasty with a different texture, like very course ground or diced pork. I'll reserve judgement when I return for some tacos and the mulita.
In addition your choice of five salsas were available. To my preference they were all well blended to increase the 'late heat' factor; I don't care for large chunks of chile in my salsas but YMMV. The yellow one might have been habanero or manzano but the heat was well tamed. Likewise the light green one had a bright serrano flavor. The other ones appeared to be de arbol, tomatillo+chipotle and a traditional darker green jalapeno+tomatillo.
The truck manager was very friendly and noted that the city inspected and approved of his truck.
