L'Avenida -- Worst Burrito Ever?

cc | Jun 15, 2004 03:12 AM

I live in the Inner Sunset, and pass by this popular burrito spot at least 3x a week. The last time I ate there was probably 1999. Since then, I've only seen the crowds grow and the premises have undergone a major renovation that spoke of a swelling cash register.

This past Saturday I thought that perhaps I had been a bit too harsh, that its growing popularity only spoke to an improving product. I decided to give it a shot and see how bad it could really be.

Worse that I imagined, I am sorry to report.

The carne asada supreme burrito was, simply put a disaster. Now I know what my friends from NYC complain about when they say they can't find decent Mexican.

Fatal flaws:
General Temperature: Cold to Lukewarm
Spiciness: El Paso-level
Beef: Cooked about 2 hours prior to consumption, lifeless and cold
Black Beans: Canned
Rice: Hard and generally useless filler
Cheese: Flavorless
Guac: Nonexistent

As a SF resident of 10 years I know my burritos. I've been at El Farolito more times than I can count. I can't remember the last time I threw out a burrito, but I had to jettison this mess. I have no illusions that this review will stop the hordes of UCSF students/employees from queueing up to overpay for this insultingly insipid fare but please stop the madness. The food is just not good. Just keep walking down to Yumma's or Pluto's.
