So we were cruising Sahara a few weeks ago and noticed a sign for "Rani's International Foods" (on the south side of the street, a block or two east of Decatur; 4505 W. Sahara.) Although there was no indication it was an Indian store, DH reminded me that the name Rani is hindi ("Queen"), and we vowed to return when we weren't in a hurry to get somewhere else. So Sunday am we decided to check it out; we needed some Indian groceries anyway....
Rani's is apparently part of a small chain of Indian groceries, but this is the first in Vegas. And definitely the best East Indian Grocery in town now. It is very large and clean (almost the size of a small supermarket), with a great produce section (some good unusual choices) and lots of snacks and frozen foods, as well as a good selection of dals, prepared foods, rice, well everything really:-). Prices are reasonable.
But if you come for groceries, stay for lunch. Seriously. They feature a Thali lunch (or could be dinner easily) for 7.99. They have a choice of options, and you can pick and choose...you get servings of about five different dishes, plus pickles, onions, and two freshly made rotli. And that's the beauty of the thali: everything was tasty and freshly made that day...the chana masala was some of the best I've had anywhere, and the gobi (cauliflower) was also very good. Its all vegetarian. They also have a limited Chaat menu; I sampled the bhel puri and the samosa chaat and both were excellent. The samosa chaat came with a very creamy high-quality yogurt. We also bought some samosas that we ate for lunch today (a day later) and they still tasted fresh and delicious.
There are a few tables and clean restrooms to use if you decide to eat your lunch in the store. No, it isn't fancy...you'll be eating next to the soda refrigerators. But this is some of the freshest-tasting vegetarian Indian food around. And at around 20 for two for lunch including a couple of drinks grabbed from the cooler or some chai, you won't find anything better for the price in town unless you are a guest at my house:-)
Rani's also has the advantage of being fairly convenient to the strip: its about a mile or two west of Las Vegas Blvd. I would be willing to bet there's a bus.....
Definitely check it out. We will definitely be back.....
