Las Delicias del Mero, Mero! Mexican Grill opened a year ago in south San Jose. The owner/chef, Hector Plascenia, previously worked at Día de Pesca and Orale, both known for Mexican-style seafood specialties.
The taqueria's tag line, "The best fish tacos in town!" sounds like canned hype. But after two seafood lunches there, I can say that the grilled scallop taco is worth making a detour.
Las Delicias is very busy at lunch time. You order and pay at the counter, then your food is brought to the table.
Chips and salsa are complimentary. However, the runners were so busy and backed up, my lunch order arrived before my chips did.
Special of the day, Halibut Enchiladas Suizas, $10.95, were outrageously good. Velvety green Suiza saucing had a bit of a spicy kick under the creamy richness, and the halibut fillets were grilled to perfect texture. Mexican rice was light and fluffy.
Grilled scallop taco, $4.10, began with chunks of juicy, seared scallops, topped off with strips of sweet red and green bell peppers, a bit of shredded cabbage crunch, and white onion. Drizzles of chipotle crema and creamy avocado salsa were the finishing touch. The lightly grilled peppers contributed a satisfying crispness and a sweet vegetal note. One ding would be that the doubled corn tortillas were not softened and warmed by a turn on the grill but go straight from the plastic bag to the plate.
The menu offers ten different seafood options for the fish tacos. As good as the seafood cookery is here, I was dumbfounded to observe that the most common lunch order seemed to be either a chicken or carne asada burrito.
