las cazuelas - pupusas in highland park

diep | Jan 29, 2004 06:09 PM

a friend who grew up in highland park took me to las cazuelas for pupusas. i have never been much of a pupusa fan -- always thought they were too doughy/starchy and the fillings not too great. but the pupusas at las cazuelas were wonderful. i don't know if it's more lard or what, but the dough was moist and flavorful, with a slightly crisp skin. and their pickled cabbage is tasty, too - nicely tangy, salty, and aromatic.

the fried plantains with beans and crema on the side were great, too. on one occasion, my beans came to the table cold - which didn't taste good. but a quick nuke in their microwave solved that problem.

i've only been there twice and haven't veered from the pupusas and plantains, so can't comment on the rest of their menu. service is friendly.

i'm going out for cocktails with some co-workers tonight, but what i really want is to get onto the freeway and head for las cazuelas.
