lard and watermelon

big head | Apr 4, 200411:12 PM

i'm looking for good sources of these two items - i've been disappointed with most of the watermelons i've tried with the best coming from gelsons for 1.29 / lb which is steep - whole foods was pithy/bland and ralphs was unedible - i've tried the santa monica (wed)/hollywood/west hollywood/la cienega & larchmont farmer's markets but they were not to be seen - it might also be a seasonal thing but i'm not used to eating strawberries right now but they're here - also went over to chinatown which is where i got them in ny but didn't really find produce the way they had it everywhere in ny.

the lard is not to accompany the watermelon but for my baking - i was wondering where i could find the good old-fashioned stuff my great grandmother put in everything (not the con-agra partially hydrogenated bricks) - i was thinking to call harvey guss to get some pork fat to render but just wondered if someone knew of a source. there's nothing better for pastry and i'm rationalizing that it's healthier than hydrogenated vegetable oil anyways. butter is great but doesn't work as well alone (they're good partners)

thanks for any recs
