Lappert's Date Shake | Palm Springs

Melanie Wong | Jul 20, 201801:52 AM

In February, the final edible of my visit was a date shake from Lappert's Premium Gourmet Ice Cream in downtown Palm Springs. Actually, I bought a pair of them the night before my departure. One to share with friends over dinner at home, and the second went into the freezer to fuel my drive the next morning.

Lappert's makes the shake with whole dates, not crystals, and its premium ice cream. I was offered a choice of all vanilla ice cream or the recommended vanilla plus "Date Casablanca" flavor that is date ice cream with caramel fudge. I went with the latter. Lappert's coats the inside surface of the 16-ounce cup with date puree, as well as blending it with the ice cream. The flavor of dates comes through clearly. I did find this a bit too sweet, perhaps from the caramel fudge component, and in the future would probably order it differently. Or perhaps if the whipped cream topping were blended in fully, the sweetness would be better balanced. The quality of the ice cream made this superior to Windmill's version.

My frozen-overnight shake took less than two hours to defrost in the car and was ready to consume when I was ready for the morning sugar rush. I think this will become SOP for future driving departures from Palm Springs.

P.S. Also worth noting that this location of Lappert's serves Dole Whip.
