Langdon Hall

Langdon Hall lived up to the name. I will focus on the cuisine here, but I must duly note that the service in the entire establishment was impeccable, companionable, attentive to the t's, and a real joy. Within moments of entering any room in the Hall, a staff member would arrive to light a wood fire, genuinely ask about you, chat if you wished, and take care of whatever your needs were. It was like being transported to another time when service was an art, not a necessity.

On to the cuisine. As the plates arrived I was about to comment to my guests on the tiny portions and wish I'd have brought some snacks for late night. I'm a fan of portions that fill but do not overfill. Some happy medium between 'micro cuisine' and 'American Diner'. However, I bit my tongue and tried to be as positive as possible. It paid off. The first course was one of the best foie gras I've had in a long time. It cut like a tender piece of meat, and then melted the second it touched your tongue. It was very nicely complimented by the textures of the lentils and hard apple caramel. The main was a 'lamb canon' which was various cuts of lamb cooked different ways, of course. They were noticeably high grade meats, perfectly done, and the flavours bordered on game-y, which was very nice. This must have meant it was dry aged for a significant amount of time.

The service throughout dinner was attentive, but at times slightly amatuerish. They went through the steps, but they dripped the wine all over the table on a number of occasions, dropped the cutlery twice, etc. This, however, could be completely overlooked as the server would consciously blush over his mistakes, and apologize with a smile. It became more endearing than anything. There was surprisingly no pomposity or pretentiousness with any of the service. For such a high-flying place, and so much money in the air, it was very relieving, and made for a very relaxed experience.

Unlike many places in downtown Toronto where service and quality come second to arrogance and ostentation, this place out in the country did everything very well, and succeeded in the number one goal of a restaurant: Make you feel really good about having dropped the amount of money you did for a meal.
