Lake Forest - goodbye frozen custard, hello tapioca drinks

Juris Dog | Jul 10, 200504:18 PM

Probably old news to some, but I was out doing weekend chores yesterday and noticed Kill Devils is gone for good. The last few times I thought I'd stop for frozen custard in the middle of a weekend day they were closed, which seemed like a bad sign. Now the sign and furniture are gone, confirming their departure. Other than the frozen custard, I thought they were useless, so I'm not too upset.

Meanwhile, I noticed we have a Tapioca Express hidden away on Center St., a little back street off of Rockfield, across from The Hat, in a strip mall next to Kim's Vietnamese (which I've yet to try). I got a fresh watermelon yesterday that was really refreshing.

Having boba drinks in walking distance is great. I had stopped earlier at the Tapioca Express at Walnut and Jeffrey and gotten an incompetently made iced coffee with boba -- the boba were hot because they were just made, and ruined the iced coffee, and even if they hadn't been, it was made with powdered flavoring that didn't get mixed in and sat in a lump on the bottom. So I recommend the fresh fruit versions and if you're in lower Lake Forest, give this new one a try because I think their location is pretty lousy and I'm not sure they're going to make it.
