folks,

Dont know if the word is out on this or not, but this one is a gem.

Ive enjoyed tabla, taj lounge, et al but lahore is in a class by itself when it comes to south asian food. I was recently there at 4 am after a night out and it was the most soulful food ive had in quite a while. As a Hindu, ive come to appreciate the unique approach to meat that muslim south asian culture has developed over the centuries. At its best, the meat should be heartily tender as well as infused with spice. I had an unusual lamb kebab w/wheat that i never even heard of before w/biryani, dhal, and yoghurt for a princely 4 bucks. this is the kind of variation on the theme that the average desi eats in his house every night. Shockingly, the usual 'drowned in oil' curries that you find at practically every other indian restaurant in ny is absent here, enough to feel like you are eating a 'light meal' after a heavy night of boozing.

ps- for those of you who have traveled to the subcontinent - i cant think of a more authentic feel a what it feels like to be a in roadside stall enjoying a meal while on your way...........
