Craving a coastline view for lunch, we drove to Laguna Beach and were happy to see that the Laguna Village Cafe location is open again for dining.
Torta, I think you'll enjoy this place.
We ordered two appetizers (1) chips and salsa and (2) soup du jour - mushroom celery.
(1) Chips came in their sealed bag - organic I think. We asked for a plate - but what they hey for others coming off the beach for a snack. The salsa was topped with avocado. Good portion. Simply very fresh tomatoes with white onion and cilantro, not a lot of heat. But, they do have a hotter salsa that comes with the tacos.
(2) Thinking it might be a cream soup (aren't most mushroom soups?) I was delighted to see I wouldn't be breaking my waistline on it. It was rich with mushrooms and freshly cooked celery in a clear broth (chicken?) with hints of a bay leaf and thyme. Has a few small bites of potato, too. Weather was a little overcast and this soup was perfect with it. I really enjoyed the homemade flavor; kind of like a dark chicken broth with veggies. Delicious, IMO. Anxious to try the clam chowder.
(3) The french dip sandwich was not really better than the one you can get at The Jolly Roger near there for $2 less, but it was generous on the beef. And, with the VIEW - very worth it. It arrived at the table cold though - like they forgot to heat it. Service was good though and the delay to heat was minimal. Wonder what would have been had it been very busy that day.
(4) Fish tacos were really good. I opted for halibut (grilled and moist), but they also offer shrimp or calimari. I would definitely order these again and again. My friend allowed me to share salsa appetizer - great combo.
Torta, as you know, this is the best view along the coast of Orange County. Definitely go soon and be pleased.
Also, for others, see the best (kept current) address link to Laguna Beach restaurants below. The address is there for the Cliff Restaurant, however, the map lacks the location. It is just to the left of #42 (at Legion Street) on the map. (Click near the bottom of the purple square on the map - you'll see)
