Just got back from a short trip to LA and managed to sneak in stops at Shibucho, Nozawa, Tama and Kanpachi during my stay. Here are my brief impressions:
Shibucho Costa Mesa
- fresh wasabi, Shibutani, perfectly cut and molded sushi, this place rocks! 'nuff said.
- fresh fish, excellent rice & crab rolls, didn't get his interpretation of omakase nor his inability to mold the rice properly, loves to drown his sushi in ponzu to the point where my tongue was numbed by the taste course after course. If you do go, don't "trust him" and order off the menu. Would not return.
- good fish tends to cut them large, not much else to shout about. At this point wondering if Studio City spots are getting overhyped and cater exclusively to western clientele??
- did not get a chance to have omakase due to one california roll only dining companion. Addition of two new assistants was not for the better, fish not properly cut, quality just ok. Didn't get the fresh wasabi like everyone else. Still packed with Japanese regulars though.
All in all very good to excellent quality and a relative bargain by East Coast standards. Can't wait for my next visit and more sushi binging...
