Tried to have dinner tonight at La Ripaille in the West Village. Have loved this cozy French place for years. My friend and I ordered a St. Emilion Premier Cru and found it a bit musty, if not corked. To put this in perspective, we drink 4 or 5 bottles of highly rated wine a week ranging in price from $30 to $130/bottle, so we know of what we speak. When we tried to send the wine back, the owner came over and insisted it was not corked and told us that if we did not like it we should leave the restaurant, which we did without having dinner but with telling him we would never return. Visa got a call immediately.
Perhaps he was having a bad day, but I've never experienced anything like this here in The States nor in Europe. Be warned.
