In March I noticed an ice cream shop, La Michoacana Paleteria y Neveria, on my way to the freeway. The ice creams and frozen desserts are made in-house according to traditional Michoacan recipes. It's been open since October 2016.
When I said it was my first time in the shop, the owner walked me through a tasting of his favorite flavors: chongos, cajeta, mamey, piñon, tuna (cactus fruit), beso de cupido (compressed peanut), mango, and a fantastic maracuya (passionfruit) sorbet with whole seeds that do indeed add an extra nuance. The flavors were concentrated and true in a dense ice cream base.
However, I had to try a paleta. This nuez paleta con leche was $2.10. To go, I bought a medium size pepino, limon y chia agua fresca, $4, without ice that was barely sweetened and so refreshing.
La Michoacana also has a full menu of snacks such as tostilocos. I snapped this photo of a customer&#39;s chicharron with cuerito.
Returning to Watsonville last month, I stopped by again to get a real serving of the maracuja plus the pistachio in a double scoop, $4.50. While I still love the intense flavor of the maracuja in this sorbet, I did get tired of all those crunchy seeds.
This is another great addition to the fine Mexican paleta and ice cream shops on the Central Coast.
