La Lupe - carnitas

The craving for Elotes sent us to La Lupe again. (Greenpoint between 43rd and 44th in Sunnyside, closed on Wednesdays) This time the new waiter actually asked us which kinds of Elotes, the "asado" with mayonnaise and queso, of course. I also got a small Pozole which came with 2 tostadas, and a taco. There were out of cesina, so I got carnitas. I was reminded again how fantastic their tacos are. The meat had really nicely charred parts, with some quacomole, wrapped (fan-like with an open end) with 2 soft tacos. (I'll never touch the 96th street taco truck in Manhattan again) We complimented it to the waiter, who graciously said thanks, and with reverence said that the "Duena" is a really good chef. From past experience, if there are certain days she's there, I think it's probably at least Thursdays and Sundays.

We walked by Wendy's on our way home, and wondered why those people in Wendy's didn't know about these $2 tacos that are so much more satisfying.....

I was also reminded how I've taken for granted that there's this kind of tacos, and then there's the hard shell "taco bell" in other parts of the town. I once had someone from Manhattan come to La Lupe, who insisted on ordering a Burrito instead of Tacos. She was disappointed with her Burrito, but was totally overwhelmed with my tacos. "That's a taco?", she asked.
