La Isla in Hoboken

I went here with a friend for dinner, and had an exteremly good meal. For appetizer, chorizo sliced very thin the long way and sauteed with parsely and served on grated yucca crackers,w hich absorbed the juices -- wonderful. For mains, my friend had a grilled skirt steak which was excellent, topped with chopped onion and parsely and with excellent french fries. It came with a chimmichurri sauce which left me cold, but the steak was so good it was superfluous anyway. I had masitas which were verygood, if not quite as wonderful as the steak. But they were tender and crisp, and had a fresh lard taste, not the old barnyardy lardy taste that clings to the masitas in so many restaurants in NY. Good black beans as well -- they tasted of cumin and pepper, and were a bit swiny as well.

La Isla is at 104 Washington St., a few blocks from the PATH. You can BYOB, or they will order in from a liquor store. Our dinner was about $34 incl. tax and tip, though no drinks.
