La Huasteca Pasadena Dinner

inyo44 | Mar 21, 200601:00 PM

Went for Dinner last night, which happened to be their first night open for dinner.

Place is beautiful inside stunning murals and fresh tortilla station, small full bar in front.

Ordered Chips and Guac to start. Guac wasn't bad but didn't blow me away. Also bring chips drizzled with mole sauce and a side of smoked salsa. Wasn't bad but chips weren't very good - hopefully they get those right.

Caddilac margarita was excellent made with fresh lime juice $9.

Ordered Fish Taco started, chipolte mayo/cabbage, big piece of grilled achiote marinated snapper. Very good $4. Grilled Shrimps in a cactus basil sauce with a julliene of fresh veggies - excellent and very light.

Tortilla Soup was excellent smoked chili flavor and Chicken Consomme was also excellent with shredded chicken and jalapeno and espasote, both have broth poured into your bowls at the table. Small portions, but very good and light.

Chicken Enchilada ($13?) I think it was the Ranchera which was a Pumpkin Mole Sauce was very good and light. Served with Black Beans and Rice - black beans were very good. Chicken Mole ($13)- brown (chocolate?) mole sauce was very good tender, excellent fresh flavor.

Dessert was a coconut flan was high quality with lots of coconut flavor and very creamy not too much of the sugar juice, just right.

The chef came over to explain that everything is made on the premises fresh and no lard or msg is used in any of their ingredient. By the black beans you can tell its not from a can. Everything is very light and fresh tasting. This isn't your cheese bomb place and very authentic interpretation of true Mexican flavors and food. Given it was their opening night I was very impressed. They going to have to work on the prices a bit, as well as some of their dishes, but I wish it well and will return to sample more in the Future.
