Church Ave., near my (somewhat) new home can get kind of bleak between Coney Island Ave. & East 16th, with lots of shuttered storefronts. So I'm really rooting for the new Mexican place that opened up there between Argyle and Westminster. They're clearly making an effort to set up a nice place.
Unfortunately, the place always seems empty and there's a constant sign out seeking a cook. The dishes I've had there have been spotty, but I'm trying to be positive and focus on what I like.
The last meal I got there was chicken tamales and a torta al pastor. The chicken tamales were mediocre and not at all up to the level of, say, Speedy's in Sunset Park: they were dry and bland.
The torta al pastor was somewhat better: a nice big fat sandwich with pork, jalapenos, lettuce, and avocado.
However, with Taqueria Los Poblanos a few blocks away (Church Ave. & East 8th), with superior cemitas al pastor and great tacos, I may have to forego the local business!
If anyone else has a different experience, I'm interested to hear it.
