if you were an LA 'hound moving to the Bay Area with 2.2 pups . . .

what area would you want to live in? Putting aside the issues of good/bad public schools, etc, we are interested in the best [short drive, walking or public transport] access to really good chow, including particularly Chinese.

There's a chance of a transfer for me to San Francisco for work. I've always loved visiting the area but thats not the same as living there and I am ashamed to say that I really have never gone far beyond the core of San Francisco.

Right now we live in LA in Koreatown, an area replete with Korean and Salvadorian restaurants and very easy access to the San Gabriel valley with all the wonderful Chinese food. Our entire family loves that when you don't feel inspired to cook, there's a 80% chance of a street vendor pushing a cart ladden with tamales or chili rellanos wandering down our street, calling out the wares. We've become such a regular with one guy, he stops under our window to yell. Out of lunch staples in the morning? By our bus stop are two different tamale sellers [Mexican and Salvadorn] and a man squeezing fresh orange juice to drink on the bus.

We'd like to find something like our current neighborhood with lots of diversity and family priced food. We don't plan to buy--we are thinking of renting an apartment. We have a good budget for housing but not unlimited funds.

So where in San Francisco do we go for something just like home?

thank you kindly.
