LA Hound at Le Zinc with questions

Drove into the city last night about 945pm on our way to Clearlake. Needed a SF fix and sometimes no plan is the best plan. Tried to find a copy of the new restaurant issue of SF Magazine but from Walgreen's to liquor stores on Polk and Union no luck. Finally, pulled up to Beetlenut and asked the hostess (nice to see they were on a wait) if she could recommend a good bistro. Hadn't been up here in awhile and had we been thinking we would've gone to Jeanty's at Jack's. However, she steered us to Le Zinc in the Noe and we were so happy. They were lovely, staying open past 10pm to accommodate us, all the while pointing out that the three Frenchmen would be there long after us. There were. French is French and the warm goat cheese salad with perfectly dressed greens started us well along with a scallop ravioli in a silky sauce that can only be described as classic French. But the ribeye for $28 was a great share at 1030pm with the kind of au poivre you really want. The pernod scented haricot verts and the potato pancake rounded it out nicely. J pinot by the carafe for $30 was good, too. Only the tart tatin lacked. The accompanying maple ice cream was very good but the individual tart missed that burnt gooey caramelization one longs for. Great neighborhood hang. The staff is ace with Diana the perfect hostess. Total bill was $130 with tip and tax.

Our unintended homage to Julia Child began earlier with luscious tri tip tacos at Le Super Rica in Santa Barbara. Have one more meal tonight in the wine country! Where? Where? Where? The standbys are always Mustard's or Tra Vigne. Don Giavanni? Any thoughts? We're more of Zuni, Boulevard kind of group rather than the fussier stuff. Also, one last request. Tomorrow in the city.
