So I found a mess of good stuff in the recent post inspired by Baldy. However, I don't think we are nearly as hungry or ambitious as B. So here's my question. I am looking for five outstanding Chicago restaurant experiences. I actually went to college in Chicago. So I don't feel like I need to do the pizza/hot dog thing, though we no doubt will. We like dives and upscale places equally well, though we have a soft spot for sleepers and bargains. We will be staying near the Watertower but don't mind traveling a little, especially if we can do the El. (We're cheap, but not necessarily for good food.) If it's at all helpful, our favorite spots in L.A. include Spago (duh!), 2117 for inspired Japanese food with a French flare, Carnaval in the valley for awesome and cheap Middle Eastern food, Campanile, and Rockenwagner. Any and all cuisines are fine. I guess it would be ideal to have a good mix of places. So where would you send your two food obsessed friends if they came to Chicago? Also, I used to work on West Erie, or is it East Erie? There was a terrific Mexican place nearby that made massive and very tasty burritos and fresh juices. I'd love to go back but I sure as heck don't remember what it is called. Something like Tecalitlan?
