La Ghianda, the little cafe/deli just kitty corner on Alma from parent La Quercia opened this past weekend and what a welcome addition to the neighbourhood!
Primarily a lunch and early dinner spot it has a simple and inexpensive menu of well prepared italian-style dishes served in a small communal setting and looks to be a hit from the start.
With the guys from La Quercia overlooking all aspects of the food you get high-end quality at very affordable price points. Basically: apps for $6. and main dishes like pastas or meat with sides for $10. Sandwiches are done up on home made Ciabatta loaves.
There is one dinner special per evening and that's an area they are still playing with as they currently close at 6:00pm! Everything can be take-away as well.
I was starving when I got there this afternoon and wanted at least two courses. The soup of the day -Pasta Fagioli- would have killed me combined with a main course so I went for the Polenta Gnocchi with Wild Mushrooms and the Scallopine Limone (pork) which came with three sides from a selection on the sideboard. All were delicious. I finished with a super moist carrot cake (non-pineapple!) and a great Americano. All this with a Limonata came to $29.
This is the kind of place every neighbourhood dreams of....
The only thing missing to make it perfect is wine which they are working on.
With Transylvania Bakery moving to the same area in the next while things are heating up in the hood.
