Thanks to all who suggested I try La Fornaretta. We went to the one in Old Town, and the owner greeted me at the door, knowing I was the one who made the reservation for seven. The service started out a bit slow; it took about 10 minutes to get water and wine glasses, but 'leisurely' may be a better and more positive word to describe it. When I asked how the pizza was (i.e thick or thin) the waiter threw up his hands laughingly and said "You know how my pizza is? It is GOOD!" which I thought was charming. I ended up ordering the mushroom 'salad' and the penne ala norma. The mushrooms were excellent- sauteed in a light broth/wine/lemon sauce and the pasta was also very good; my companions ordered the salad with beets, toasted pine nuts, spinach, carmelized onions and shaved aged ricotta which was worth drooling over.....the flavors and textures were perfectly combined. I've had similar salads at many other places but theirs is far superior. Another friend had the vegetable pizza- the crust is puffy and chewy on the edges, thing and tender in the middle.
All in all a wonderful experience.
