Are any of you aware of a solid resource guide for LA amateur cooks who must buy at retail?
There must be some published or on-line resource, I thought, for where to find things like live crayfish, Santa Barbara spot prawns, quality oysters (say, from Hog Island), killer prime meats & game, boned quail, hand-made tortillas, the best bread, vegetable oddities like fresh fava beans or sugar cane, artisanal cheeses, off-beat seasonings and spices, etc.
I checked with Cooks Library in West Hollywood but they were stumped. They mentioned that Jonathan Gold published a book, Counter Intelligence, but back in 2005, and they no longer carried it in stock. Local Farmer's Markets provide a great source, but it's hit or miss if you absolutely have to find the needed thing without driving all over the place.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
