La Espiga

After watching the Mets win a weird 2-0 game against
the SF Giants, a friend and I finally made our maiden
visit to La Espiga (the Corona branch, natch). And
I'm afraid to say that I have to offer the first
discouraging words I've heard about the place.

The chilaquiles (with beef) featured a thin, flavorful
(but to be honest, the dominant taste was salt) steak
aside a pile of glop. The chorizo huaraches? The
chorizo was fine, but the whole was less than the sum
of the parts. Yes, there were beans in there, and
they must have tasted like something or other, but I
couldn't prove it.

We were so disappointed that I had to try a taco, and
I was in the mood for carnitas. This was by far the
best item we sampled. And now I wish I had followed
my first instinct: to try the al pastor and the
tortas, which seemed to be the most popular item by
far.
