I just found La Brasa, an excellent little Columbian restaurant that does traditional home-style Columbian cooking. The place is in a strip mall just next to a gas station and a laundromat but the decor is not bad. It's not a dive like Fax Chix (which is one of my favorite places) but more like a cross between a diner and a Chinese take out joint. The food is excellent; and the proprietor doesn't speak much English, but he has an English menu.
First time I was there, I ordered the Picante Platter, which turned out to be this HUGE foil tray of different meat from charbroiled steak to rotiessierie chicken to chorizo, to pork, with 2 different kids of plantains and yucca. It was enough to feed 5 girls, all for just $14.50. We also ordered a small order of rice and beans which came in a 6" container, about $3. It was the best rice and beans I've ever had, even beating the old grandmother that I used to buy food from that lived next door to me. We also ordered empanadas, which were very excellent. I can't wait to go back and try everything else! This was real Columbian home-style cooking, not some Americanized version.
Platters run about $9-$12, with the most expensive thing on the menu at $14.50. It also supposedly specializes in 6 varieties of hotdogs (which I don't know if it is a south American or Columbian thing) including some that come topped with steak and chicken. They run about $4-$5 each, though I have to admit I haven't tried them yet.
