My wife and I are traveling to Kyoto for the first time in August and are looking for some suggestions to round off our current itinerary. We are a couple from NYC who frequent all the highly rated Japanese spots in NYC. We visited Japan for the first time last year (Tokyo and Hakone) and tried many of the high end sushiyas in Tokyo so am looking to try some other types of cuisines this time round in Kyoto. We will only have 4 nights in Kyoto, and this is what we have planed so far:
Day 1: arriving early afternoon to KIX, check in at the Ritz Kyoto, dinner at Tempura Matsu (modern kaiseki)
Day 2: plan to spend the morning visiting the Arashimaya area, set lunch at Shoraian (tofu), spend afternoon visiting Gion, dinner at Hafuu Honten (wagyu)
Day 3: Early morning visit to Fushimi Inari, no reservations for lunch, maybe visit another part of Kyoto in the afternoon, dinner at Nakahigashi (traditional kaiseki)
Day 4: Completely open right now, could consider visiting Nara or nearby town, but also don't mind staying around Kyoto and taking it easy given its supposed to be very hot and humid and my wife will be 5 months pregnant.
Day 5: early morning departure from KIX.
Any suggestions for lunches and casual dinners to round out what we have so far would be great. Other things I have on my list from my CH research are a couple of ramen shops, Kyoto style sushi, but I'm interested in what other ideas people have on places that are good but hard to find in NYC. No budgetary constraints but probably prefer shorter meals for the last day since we learnt from past trips that too many long meals tire us out in a short trip. Thanks!
