Them Ky visit

dixieday | Oct 16, 2001 02:06 PM

Walked through the Tenderloin the other day to get a quick lunch at Them Ky, little Chinese/Vietnamese joint on Ellis by Larkin. Two rooms, clean and busy, with a long row of plastic cups half-filled with creamy pastel liquids--pink, yellow, tan, lavender, peach, aqua--showing all the different flavors of pearl tea that they offer, with black tapioca balls at the bottom and those special wide-mouth straws (in matching colors). They also have a whole glass deli case filled with ready-to-go cups of Asian beverages--can anyone tell me what "grass jelly" would be? Lots of specials up on hot-pink cards on the wall, most in both vietnamese and english. Tried the sweet-spicy shrimp soup--a big bowl brimming with shrimp, bean sprouts, pineapple chunks, tomato slices, and herbs in a tangy, spicy broth. Similar to tom yum, but sweeter and less sour. My lunch companion had a basic veggie-tofu stirfry--a bit greasy, but a wide variety of good vegetables (bok choy, shiitakes, carrots, baby corn, etc.)Definitely looking forward to going back and trying some more of the Vietnamese options. Anyone else have recommendations here?
