"Kurobuta" Berkshire Pork, $4.99/lb (frozen) at Marina Foods in San Mateo

Another interesting thing at Marina Foods is Berkshire pig (kurobuta) side pork. It was frosty, priced at $4.99/lb, but in the main butcher case and not in the freezer. I recognized the logo from the supplier in Iowa that I'd ordered frozen pork belly directly from before, as described,

Here's the sign on the butcher case that has the logo for Heritage Pork International

I asked the butcher about it and he gave me an earful. He said that the supplier encouraged him to stock it because it was better and Japanese would want to buy it. He railed that his Chinese customers want fresh, not frozen, so it's not moving very fast.

I think I need to go back and buy this too, otherwise the store will discontinue carrying it. It would be perfect for making dongpo rou or other braised pork belly dishes.
