Kuala Lumpur - Steamed Fish Head in Spicy Beansauce, Pudu

Interesting spot for dinner today - an old Chinese coffeeshop on Jalan Gelang, a secluded road off busy Loke Yew Road in the bustling Pudu district.

Ring Road Restaurant's claim to fame is their marvellous "Cheong Cheng" steamed fish-head, given an explosive spike in flavors with the addition of chopped bird's eye chillies, crisp golden lardons and chopped scallions. The freshwater fish used was extremely fresh, as was mandatory in Kuala Lumpur, less you want to lose all your customers.

Two other accompanying dishes: the stir-fried water spinach with garlic and fish sauce, and deep-fried seafood-flavored tofu with sweet chilli dip, were not terribly memorable. The fish head was the undisputed standout here.
