Confession: I'm not a big "nasi goreng" fan, preferring Chinese (specifically Yangzhou) fried rice anytime. An Indonesian nasi goreng always inadvertently lacked that "wok hei" (fragrance from frying over extremely high heat) which only Chinese chefs seemed to be able to achieve. But - I'm a big fan of the "petai" or stink beans. So imagine my quandary when contemplating the menu options at WIP, that insanely popular bar & restaurant (yes, in that particular order) over at the Bangsar SC this evening. In the end, love for petai won and I ordered the nasi goreng. No regrets here - perhaps the dish could have been better with MORE petai beans, but the other stuff that went into the nasi goreng made it the BEST I'd had this year - no mean feat considering that I'd just been back from a lengthy stay in Indonesia recently.
WIP's nasi goreng was tinged with chilli paste, studded with petai, topped with 3 fresh large shrimps, and served with a crisp-fried chicken wing, a delicious green mango sambal & a spicy-sweet relish that was out of this world. A handful of crisp prawn crackers completed the dish.
My appetiser was a delight as well - a refreshing combination of cubed fresh watermelon & feta cheese, dressed with crushed peanuts & balsamic vinegar. Perfect for KL's balmy weather this evening.
