This is one of the most oft-quoted eateries in KL's food blogosphere when it comes to KL-style curry noodles. Well, I finally got round to trying Kam Fatt this morning - yes, some KL folks come here at the crack of dawn to eat a steaming bowl of tear-inducing curry noodles for breakfast. Can it cure a hangover? Believe me, it can do more than cure a hangover - for one, it completely cleared my sinuses!
Kam Fatt's curry noodles come with poached chicken, "taupok" (tofu puffs) and boiled cockles. Like what many food-bloggers recommended, I ordered a plate of deep-fried-till-crisp pig's intestines to pop into the curry sauce for additional texture. Turned out - the addition of the pig's intestines saved the dish.
Do I like Kam Fatt's much-vaunted curry noodles? Not really. There was this overwhelming lemongrass scent & taste in their curry which I found disagreeable - but that's *my* personal taste. Mind you, I do like lemongrass in Thai tom yum, or in curries like Penang's signature Curry Kapitan. But somehow, in the case of Kam Fatt's thick, rich curry sauce, I'd have preferred something more "Nyonya curry"-like, with its mellow, nutty, spicy flavors, than a citrus-y, lemon-y curry.
Kam Fatt's version also did not include any aubergines or long-beans, as in the case of Madras Lane or nearby Jalan Alor's versions of KL-style curry noodles.
It's hard to compare KL-style curry noodles against Penang-style curry noodles (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/741025) , Ipoh-style curry noodles (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/840660) and Singapore-style curry noodles (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/800318) . They are all very, very different dishes altogether, despite the common Hokkien yellow noodle and/or thin rice noodle base. I loved ALL of them. But if I have to choose one which I can't live without, it has to be Singapore-style curry noodles. I'm probably biased - my tastebuds grew up on it.
Need to make a trip out to Segambut one day to try its seafood curry noodles!
