This funky-looking shack with a hot tin roof served some of the most popular roast goose in KL! Mind you, despite the name of the eatery - Chen Chen Hong Kong Roast Goose & Duck - their roast goose was nothing like what you'd get in HK (if you're looking for that in KL, a better bet would be Wei Kee in Medan Imbi - http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/819768
Rather, Chen Chen's version is pure KL, and delicious in its own way. The roast goose-meat was robust, saltier and without the slightly sweet flavors of HK-style roast goose.
Chen Chen also served caramelised barbecued pork (char-siu) and crisp-skinned roast pork (siu-yoke), both good but nowhere near the best I'd had in KL.
The roast meat's platter we had was served with some interesting sides:
- "kiam chye boey" or salted mustard soup, cooked in stock which was obviously obtained from boiling the bones from all those roasts, then flavored with dried chillis, galangal (blue ginger), tamarind and lemongrass. It sure packed a punch. Warning: Too much, and it can have a rather effective laxative effect;
- Pork ball soup - consomme-like, with bouncy, flavorsome pork balls and crunchy radish (daikon) wedges;
- Turmeric-and-butter-flavored yellow rice.
The couple who run the eatery was very friendly, and service was brisk and efficient - putting those in some prime restaurants or hotel eateries to shame.
