Back to Krystal's

I see nobody has posted about perennial Chowhound fave Krystal's Cafe in a while -- I went there for lunch yesterday and found it as good as ever. For those who are not familiar with it, Krystal's Cafe is an informal Filipino restaurant on the corner of Roosevelt and 69th, in Woodside.

Yesterday I ordered inihaw (i.e. barbecued) tilapia, which I never had there before. Lovely dish. Totally elemental -- just a whole fish, black from the grill, on a leaf of lettuce, with a small chopped salad of onion and tomato by its head. Served with a dish of rice prepared in the Filipino style, which is about my favorite form of steamed rice. So all the flavors in the dish are concrete and discernable. The earthy rice complements the juicy, salty flesh of the fish, and its charred skin provides counterpoints of flavor and texture. The salad -- I'm not sure how to describe its role within this context but it definitely played a big part in my enjoyment of the meal. All together, about the perfect lunch.
