Directly upstairs from the MUCH more expensive Makoto on MacArthur Blvd. The sushi is a dollar a piece and as good or better than most sushi you have had for more money. They also have kamemeshi rice casseroles. The casserole itself is, well, rice casserole, but the side dishes are the thing. You get four little bowls of the kind of side dishes that you never seem to get with Japanese food in this country. The best one was a simmered yellowtail jaw in a slightly sweet sauce. For dessert we had a black sesame mochi with a filling of red beans but mostly also black sesame flavored. Very cool. We had a wonderful dinner with one sake and dessert for $35 which in my experience is really cheap for Japanese food.
The menu is basically limited to sushi and the casseroles and various appetizers, but what they do, they do well. They do not yet have the yakitori grill mentioned on their web site. According to someone I know who has spoken to the owner, he's having trouble with the people he hired to install the grill. Sigh.
It was not crowded enough for a Saturday night, although they were also doing some takeout business. Don't let this one die!
