Kitaya Japanese - 31st Street

It's been open for a little more than a month, but I just noticed it for the first time two weeks ago. First reaction, after one meal, is that this is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.

We really enjoyed the sushi (nigiri & rolls) that we had. The eggplant miso dish, the only non-sushi item we tried, was really unique, and allowed the eggplant to shine. Subtle flavors, very satisfying.

The place was empty, except for a couple of small groups. And even with few customers, service was kind of slow. (But very friendly.) Didn't see any cold sake, but didn't ask. And it seems that they're still working out some kinks with the kitchen.

But the fish was perfectly fresh and very well-presented, and all the extra little touches show that they're serious about what they're doing and are setting high standards for the food.

Prices are set very low; maybe location, maybe a strategy to attract business initially. This is a real deal.

Found the room to be attractive and atmosphere was pleasant, despite occassionally distracting music.

It's on 31st, btw 5th and Madison.

If you encounter an empty restaurant, don't be deterred! I really hope these guys make it. I'll be back soon.
