Monday morning I dropped by Andy's Orchard in Morgan Hill. A regular stop for me during stone fruit season for the fabulous cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, and plums, however, this might have been my first cold weather visit.

The entrance had signs promoting persimmons for sale, and the trees near the roadway bare of leaves were loaded with the beautiful orange orbs. Inside many cultivars of fuyu and hachiya types were available, as well as hoshigaki (Japanese style semi-dried persimmons).

But what really knocked me out were the tiny Kishu mandarin oranges. Barely 2" in diameter, these were so juicy and sweet with the deep complexity of flavor and aroma that reminded me of sour oranges. These are labeled as Andy's own production. Thin-skinned, these peel easily and many had the leaves still attached in the manner favored for gifting at Chinese New Year.

I also bought the Daisy SL mandarins, a new variety. These are large, as big as a Valencia, and heavy. These were more sugary with a candied character that reminded me of orange slices jelly candy.

Now I know to make regular stops here during citrus season too. The holiday open house continues for the next two weekends before Christmas.
