I lost a daughter but gained a son. Or. in Chowhound parlance.... . my neighborhood Yemeni restaurant closed, and is now a remarkable Egyptian restaurant. A win is a win.
I've had koshary three times before yet always wondered why anyone bothered. Well, THIS is why they bother. A big bowl full of lentils, rice, and macaroni with a modicum of light tomato sauce topped with a mountain of fried onions. The onions are in a distinct style, thickly battered, fried and served dry, Like onion rings that didn't make it to the ring stage. Alongside, two sauces are served. One is like a garlic sauce and the other is a hot sauce. Finally, I 'get' koshary.
The showstopper, though, is the Alexandria style fish, a whole fish stuffed with herb paste. It is served with a tomato/cucumber salad and a perfectly domed seasoned rice dish that is bursting with flavor and is actually juicy, if that's even a possibility. Yep, it is. A complete meal in one order.
Two other items we had are a plain paratha (flaky to the extreme, served with some crumbled feta on the side) and molokia which is a bitter green. I've had this in Lebanese and Tunisian places before, served like a leafy green sludge. But in a good way. Here it is served as a somewhat gelatinous soup with some spiciness and vinegar added to the mix. Nice as a side, but I might not reorder this for a while.
