Apparently, the New York Chowhounds are doing a potlucky sort of thing.
From my past experience with chowmeets (BBQ taste testing and 888) - the at-somebody's-place thing is somehow more satisfying than the feast-at-restaurant thing. And the feast-at-restaurant thing is limited to about 12 people, max.
(I tried to look into prices for renting a chartered bus for a taco tour, but was intimidated.)
Why not do the potlucky thing? I mean, the NY Chowhounds have 80 CHOWHOUNDS converging, each bringin a favored dish from some restaurant. 12 people at a restaurant, I can do on my own. 80 person potluck with carefully selected beloved dishes from around town? Beyond my reach, baby. Only the powers of this board can do it.
Imagine: BBQ and kebab and paella and Italian sausage and Armenian sausage and carnitas and hummous and...
And it's so goddamn NICE out this time of year. Why not pick a beach, or a park, and just do it? I, for one, would like to meet all the people dissin' me 'n my food affections, and give them big hugs, because there's nothing I love more than some loud dissent.
