Kicking Myself Over & Over - Dinner at French 75

Why don't I listen to my own advice? Was at the Surf N Sand Hotel for a friend's birthday and wanted appetizers. Their appetizers weren't what we wanted, so Friend #3 says 'I've never been to French 75 - why don't we go there?' Friend #2 & myself both say, well the food is pretty awful (at least 4 bad meals there between the two of us), but let's just go for hors d'oeuvres. Last bar table is taken as we come is & there aren't 3 seats at the bar. Menu looks good (it always does...), we're hungry, so decide to ask for a table. Given lovely table on the warm tented patio. Waiter with waxed hanglebar moustache is a charaticure of a French guy in a cartoon - the huge accent, incredible food descriptions, gesticulating wildly - was totally hilarious.

'Tapenade' is delicious (more aioli/tapenade), but small - we ask for another twice & finally had it delivered after we were done with ourentrees.

Of course the entrees sound good, so we abandon the appetizer plan & just get 1 hot/cold foie gras to share. Cold was the best with a pomegranite reduction - seared so-so.

I had lamb osso bucco, which was nasty, gamey, slimey, totally gross - sent it back.

Friend had the halibut (Which I suspect strongly wasn't even halibut & was frozen at some point in it's history) - totally over-cooked, over-salted, mushy - worst fish I've tasted in years.

Other friend got the steak au poivre/frites - best dish of the evening - felt like I was in Paris eating it - not tender, but delicious. So, we all ate her's (hey, it was her fault we were there in the first place!)

They took my food off, gave us 3 glasses of wine (actually offered us another bottle of $60 Cassagne Montrachet, but we turned that down. Charged us for a bottle of Evian we didn't order/drink. Never again - remind me of that the next time I think it just might be better!
