Ketchup stains on my facemask...

gutreactions | Aug 26, 202005:02 AM 26
Sauces Pet Peeves Guest Etiquette Food Rules Coronavirus

We have been going out for meals sporatically as the pandemic restrictions are relaxed in the greater New York City area. We are careful about it. On one occasion, while working on an order of fries, I got ketchup stains on my facemask. On another, it was juices dripping from my burger. Fortunately, we carry extra masks now. Just adjusting to the 'new normal'. Has this happened to you? Have any war stories to share?

Early on we were a bit paranoid so we would keep shifting our facemasks on and off. Now we basically take them off for the duration of the meal, unless a situation comes up that requires them on again...

I'm not eating inside many restaurants so no really heinous war stories. But I have learned to (1) carry a spare, (2) wash regularly (we now do a mask wash every few days); and (3) avoid masks that are white. They just get too dirty and ugly.

As I was carving a roast chicken the other day, I got some chicken juices on my finger. I was wearing a mask in my own house because my daughter and her BF, who had to evacuate their home on short notice (wildfires), are staying with us and we're trying to expose each other as little as possible. I tried to lick the juices from my finger, and simultaneously smeared chicken juice on the outside of my mask and licked the inside of my mask, too.

I have a "gnat hat" that I wear when I'm gardening or hiking - it has a broad brim and netting that drapes to the shoulder. On more than one occasion, I've gone berry picking and tried to eat one through the net.

I don't eat inside at restaurants, and when I eat outside I take my mask off when the food arrives. All the way off - I think people wearing masks as chinstraps or earrings look like idiots.

Yesterday I was on the bus next to a woman who was snapping her gum under her mask, which I thought was a pretty neat trick.

I picked my kiddo up after her summer school program and noticed as she put her mask in the "dirty masks" bin it was green on the inside. She said they had kiwi for lunch. I asked why she didn't wipe off her face. She told me it didn't matter because everyone had a mask on.

I don't buy masks with light colored inner lining any more.

Was visiting a local microbrewery recently when the ear strings on my facemask came apart. The barkeep noticed and offered me a fresh one from a box behind the counter. Thought that was nice gesture in this age of Covid...

I went grocery shopping with mask the other day, and everything was fine until the first time I spoke to someone, because then a stray hair got into my mouth. Of course when you have a mask on you're not supposed to fiddle with it or touch your face as that will greatly reduce its efficacy. So I had to do the rest of my shopping and interact with the cashier etc. with a hair in my mouth!
