I posted this on another discussion board (link below), but I think I'll post it here too. It's a bit of a protest on my part. I'm pretty upset about this.
The tragic and depressing news is that after decades, Keil's will be leaving its location on Clairemont Drive. It'll be greatly missed. This has been a main go-to store for me and a great many others in the Bay Park/West Clairemont area for staples and specialties for ages. And it has a great salad bar.
It's being replaced by a Sprouts.
Sprouts is, eh, OK, although I tend to go just once a week to grab some of their terrific farmer's market style produce values. But Sprouts is a "healthfood and health supplements" store at its core. It's so very 1984.
With due respects to healtfood & supplements aficionados, I'm not into that, and there's already a very good Sprouts on Genesee just north of Balboa that's easy for me to reach when I want to go to a "commercial farmer's market" / health food- type place. So this new one will be pretty much redundant in my case.
Actually, I don't quite get it, but change happens. I wish this could be reversed. It's hard to believe.
The closest normal grocery store for Bay Park has been Keil's. Now the closest will be Von's. Which isn't all that bad. Just not the same; not a small, local, full-service grocery. With normal products. And not nearly as close or as easy to get into/out of.
Timeframe is that Keil's closes for business end of October; lease expires end of the year. Sprouts to open "late 2017".
